Sunday proved deadly for Brevard County motorists after four people were killed in four separate crashes from Titusville to Cocoa.

  • FHP's Kim Montes said there's been uptick in fatalities
  • 13 Brevard fatalities in 2018 so far

At about 1 a.m., 24-year-old Tyler Barkley of Rockledge was riding a motorcycle near mile marker 200 on Interstate 95 when his bike rear-ended a semi truck, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol. He was ejected and died at the scene.

Barkley was wearing a helmet, troopers said.

Less than three hours later, at about 3:30 a.m., troopers responded to the intersection of U.S. 1 and Broadway Boulevard after two vehicles struck 57-year-old Daniel Wheeler of Cocoa. According to FHP investigators, Wheeler was in the road, "not standing," when he was hit by the first car.

The second vehicle drove off, and troopers don't have a description at this time, they said.

At about 4 p.m., troopers responded to Camp Road about a mile away from the 3:30 a.m. accident. Investigators said 87-year-old Richard Basso of Cocoa died after being hit by a vehicle.

According to the report, Basso rolled past a stop sign and drove into the direct path of another vehicle.

A few miles away, a little before 5 p.m., Titusville Police say 36-year-old Jonathan Reuss died after attempting to make a left turn while riding a motorcycle.

“It’s still under investigation as to what exactly happened. We do believe that driver error occurred, or in the part of the pedestrian, not crossing at a designated location,” FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said.

Montes said there's been an uptick in fatalities. There have been 13 fatalities in Brevard so far in 2018, compared with nine during the same time in 2017.
