A viewer from Daytona Beach thinks a couple of simple fixes could make a big difference at one particular intersection.

  • Daily congestion at Daytona Beach intersection
  • Tomoka Farms Road and US-92 is usually backed up for a couple blocks
  • Viewer suggests adding left, right and straight only lanes

Edward Fisk wrote in this week about the intersection of Tomoka Farms Road and US-92. According to Fisk, he sits at that intersection every morning and watches traffic in the area back up.

"I moved up from Fort Lauderdale to get out of the congestion about 15 years ago when I retired,” Fisk said.  “And now, it's catching up here."

Fisk drives up the northbound side of Tomoka Farms Road to US-92 every day.

"Well, it's a beautiful drive until you get near the Flea Market and then it starts tightening up,” he said.  “And sometimes it's backed up for a couple of blocks."

As it stands right now, on the northbound side of Tomoka Farms Road at US-92, there are two right turn lanes and then one lane giving you the option to continue straight or turn left.

Fisk thinks that most of this side's congestion issues can be solved by simply making one lane of each:  A right turn only lane, a left turn only lane and a straight-only lane.

His other issue is on the southbound side of the road which acts as a feeder to the Daytona Flea Market.  Fisk feels the road would be better-suited if it was converted into a left turn only lane for northbound traffic leading to US-92.

So, will Ed's ideas be taken into consideration?

Volusia County and FDOT are currently awaiting funding for an “alternative intersection study” to see if anything can be done by the River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization.  It's currently the 2nd ranked priority project in the organization’s queue.
