In this week’s Traffic Inbox, we are talking about the frustrations of ‘losing a lane.’

  • Congestion at All American Blvd and Edgewater Drive make turning difficult
  • All American is a two lane road at Edgewater
  • Right lane must turn right, while left lane can go straight or turn left

This week’s submission is about intersection of All American Boulevard and Edgewater Drive in Orlando.

Cheryle Devine writes: "The problem is that there is no left turn signal and there is so much traffic coming Southbound that it's very difficult to turn."

Devine says she sees several near misses daily.

All-American Boulevard is a two lane road at Edgewater Drive.

If you are traveling northbound approaching the intersection, you have a quick decision to make. If you are in the right lane, you have to turn right.  If you are in the left lane, you have the option of continuing straight or turning left.

The problem with turning left according to Devine is that southbound traffic is so heavily congested that it could be several minutes waiting for just one car to get through, backing up the traffic traveling northbound.

Devine wants the lanes to be changed so that on the right side you can turn right and go straight and the left lane be a left turn only lane.  She also says a left turn signal could help as well.

So, what's next?

Orange County Public Works say that it has performed an initial evaluation of the area and are not opposed to changing the lane use to a left turn lane and shared through/right lane. However, the city of Orlando owns that northbound approach to the intersection.

Officials are currently working with the city to take a look to see if they agree.

As far as adding left turn arrows the county claims that the volumes do not warrant a left turn signal with arrows at this time.
