A beloved Brevard County Sheriff's deputy was laid to rest Friday, with more than 1,000 attending a service in his honor.

More than 1,000 people attended his funeral services, including hundreds of fellow officers from across Central Florida and the state.

Field Training Officer Kevin Stanton died during a traffic crash last Saturday.

Stanton was a Titusville native, and the community turned out to remember him.

Family, friends, law enforcement and Gov. Rick Scott packed the New Life Christian Fellowship Church on Friday afternoon. It's the Stanton family's home church.

Stanton was an 11-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, serving since 2007. He instructed fellow deputies on safety.

He earned several commendation letters, commendable service awards and was nominated for a Life Saving Award.

It was an emotional ceremony filled with Stanton's love for his job and his devoted faith in God.

“I think he would say, 'Sheriff, more than anyone else, please tell them they will never again go through a door alone, because I will forever be with them,' ” Sheriff Wayne Ivey said.

Stanton was working to become an agent with the Sheriff's Office's Economic Crimes Task Force. The sheriff posthumously promoted him to that rank during the service.

Stanton is survived by his father and sister. Katie Stanton, the deputy's sister, considered her brother one-of-a-kind.

“Most people have to wait their whole life to meet their hero,” Katie Stanton said. “I grew up with mine.”

After the service, the procession headed to the Oaklawn Cemetery off Garden Street through the streets of town.

Streets lined with hundreds of people, waving American flags and signs. The graveside service honored a hometown hero who gave his life protecting others.
