David W. Parsons, 33, was arrested Sunday night after deputies say they found him putting a paramedic in a chokehold on the side of the road.

The incident happened on the 720 block of East Taylor Road in DeLand.

Paramedics told deputies that the suspect was belligerent throughout their interactions with him Sunday night. One of the paramedics then reportedly saw Parsons get off the stretcher and attack the paramedic in the back.

After the paramedic driving pulled over, he opened the back door to find Parsons putting the other paramedic in a chokehold, and then allegedly rushed over to put Parsons in a chokehold until he let go of the other paramedic.

According to a news release, the scuffle spilled out of the ambulance, and Parson attempted to run at the paramedics and into oncoming traffic.

After stopping Parsons from running toward a vehicle, the paramedic was put into a chokehold again and ended up on the ground, as the other paramedic attempted to pry Parsons away, deputies say.

A Volusia deputy then arrived and tased Parsons.

Parsons has been charged with two felony counts of battery on an EMT. He was transported to Volusia County Branch Jail after being cleared at an area hospital.

The paramedics were in good condition following the altercation, authorities say.

Parson’s being held on $10,000 bail. He had his first appearance in court Monday.
