Orlando apartment residents who were once homeless came together Saturday to build a new community garden.

  • Residents at Maxwell Terrace were formerly homeless
  • Project is in spirit of 'umuganda,' a Rwandan tradition

Residents from Pathlight HOME who live at Maxwell Terrace apartments installed raised garden beds, planted vegetables and learned about urban agriculture to create their community garden.

It was a chance to continue building personal responsibility.

“We are helping the residents at Maxwell Terrace to install food gardens, where they’ll get an opportunity to grow their own food and nurture their own gardens,” program director Sharon Hammond said.

The project came together in the Rwandan tradition of umuganda, which means "coming together for a common purpose."
