A Marion County shelter is preparing to accommodate more people because of the colder weather.

  • Shelter said 'Cold Night Sign-Up' starts at 7:30 p.m.
  • Deputies said there's also space at some local churches

Salvation Army officials said anytime the temperatures go to about 45 degrees, they start preparing for extra people at the shelter on 1st Avenue in Ocala.

"Placing mats on the floor and blankets and pillows for those who would be coming in, who not necessarily would be coming in otherwise," said Major Dwayne Durham, the Core Officer of Salvation Army, Marion County.

Durham said Monday night they had 124 people sleep in the shelter and he says 91 people is usually their max.

"With the colder snap of weather we're expecting just a couple dozen more folks. We're trying to plan for an additional 40 to 50 people that we would accommodate in our shelter," he said.

There's a sign on the shelter door saying Cold Night Sign-Up is at 7:30 p.m., and officials say everyone has to go through a background check.

Once the Salvation Army shelter fills up, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said there's some space at some local churches.
