After a year of controversy, the city of Groveland has officially sworn in a new mayor.

Mayor Dina Sweatt took the oath of office at Tuesday's city council meeting.

Last week, the city council voted former Mayor George Rosario out of office.

"He refused to show us that he had clemency or a pardon, and we asked like, five times," said Mayor Dina Sweatt. "And since the lawsuit was dropped, we had the right to as council to remove him because he has no clemency and no pardon."

A year ago, it was discovered that Rosario was a convicted felon, serving probation for cocaine-related charges in the 1980's. Groveland city charter does not allow felons to hold office, unless they have had their civil rights restored by a court.

Rosario did not attend Tuesday's city council.

Mayor Sweatt said she is ready to lead the city and put the last year of controversy behind them.

"I hope this is just the beginning of everyone coming together and giving Groveland a new name," Sweatt said.
