Boynton Beach Police have identified the woman who was killed by a Brightline train during a preview run Friday night.

Melissa Lavell, 32, was crossing the tracks in an attempt to beat the train after the guard rails were in the down position, police said.

The train was traveling north on the Florida East Coast Railway when it struck Lavell shortly before 6:30 p.m., police said. No one on the train was injured.

Brighline began service between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach on Saturday. The company has been testing its trains for several months.

Service to Miami is expected to begin later this year. The company plans to eventually expand service to Orlando.
