Melbourne company helping with communications during Irma and Maria

A Melbourne company is on the front-lines helping Hurricane Irma and Maria first responders communicate in the hardest hit areas.

Harris Corporation has delivered hundreds of satellite and broadband radios to the Keys, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The team also sent antennas and repeaters to re-establish communications there to help guide medical personnel and equipment. 

"Our teams were some of the first down to the Keys which was heavily damaged in Florida. And we got communications up and running very quickly," Nick Scardino with Harris Corp. said. 

Crews also encountered some of Florida's wildlife--like a gator--as they worked on communications towers.

Harris also provided first responder radios to Florida National Guard units working in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
