A city of Melbourne-owned marina was rocked by another hurricane when Irma pounded the Space Coast. And now it's finally set to be demolished.

  • Marina Towers in Melbourne to be demolished
  • Marina was damaged during mid-2000s hurricanes
  • Irma dealt property a final blow

"It's flying off in a storm, could cause damage," said Laura England of Rosner Chevrolet. "It's an eyesore."

England works as Rosner Chevrolet on US 1, directly across from the shuttered Marina Towers property.

When Irma's winds lashed the area overnight Sept. 10, a large piece of sheet metal broke free and crashed into a Chevy Silverado in the dealership parking lot.

"The roof and the sides were flying off in the storm and flying into the traffic on US 1, and over the dealership," England said. "It damaged one of our trucks. I'm surprised it wasn't worse."

The marina has been closed since being severely damaged during the mid-2000s hurricanes, and has weathered all the storms in between.

But now, Irma has dealt the rundown property a final blow -- the city is demolishing it.

Melbourne bought Marina Towers for nearly $1.4 million in 2013.

The goal -- guide future development of the prime Indian River-front site into a new marina, hotel and retail shops.

In the wake of the damage caused by Irma, city council voted to demo the dilapidated marina.

"We need something nice on that side of the river," said England.

The city has listed the riverfront property for sale.

Demo work on the abandoned marina is set to last two weeks.
