Hurricane Maria charged the island as a Category 4 storm and now the entire island of Puerto Rico is without power. Central Floridians with family and friends on the island are now stepping up to help.

Residents of Central Florida were nervously glued to their phones, awaiting updates about what is happening in Puerto Rico.

“We’re under a lot of stress cause we can’t get a hold of our family and friends in Puerto Rico!” exclaimed Zoraida Rios-Andino, president of Mision Boricua.

She is frustrated as she is having a difficult time getting in touch with her relatives; not knowing if they are okay makes her nervous. “We’re just desperate trying to find out how our family is doing.”

Coordinadora de Apoyo Solidaridad y Ayuda (CASA) is an organization that encompasses a number of other smaller Puerto Rican advocacy groups. Volunteers involved with CASA are collecting donations to help victims in Puerto Rico.

“We need the help of the Colombians, of the white Americans, of the black Americans, the Asians, we need the help. Puerto Rico needs the help. The fellow Americans from Puerto Rico need the help," emphasized CASA volunteer Luis Figueroa. "It is time to unite as a one and give the best to the people.”

Rios-Andino said she hopes the island is strong enough to come together and overcome this catastrophe. “I am hoping that they can come out of this very strong. We don't know yet how long it's going to take for power to be restored… It could take months.”
