A group in Brevard County is helping residents after Hurricane Irma.

Volunteers with Keep Brevard Beautiful are cleaning up debris and trash throughout the county.

“We’re asking all of our folks to, instead of our normal cleanups, to go out and work their neighborhoods, help their neighbors and to contact us if we can help in any way at all,” said Tony Sasso, executive director of Keep Brevard Beautiful.

Although the group hasn’t seen a lot of debris in neighborhoods, there has been debris washed up on area beaches.

Keep Brevard Beautiful is urging residents to pitch in, asking them to alert teams to areas that need cleaning up. The group also hopes to see more people volunteer to help.

“Government services are great and they are very important, but it’s neighbors helping neighbors,” said Sasso. “That’s really what KBB is all about as well as the other local groups that are out there doing this.”

During 2016, the group collected 850,000 pounds of trash. Officials said they’re close to reaching that amount with nearly 600,000 pounds collected so far this year.

Keep Brevard Beautiful believes it’ll surpass last year’s total over the next few weeks as they continue to clean up after Irma.
