Starting today, teams of Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives will be going door-to-door helping people register for assistance throughout the area.

A FEMA representative said they will be in Orange County on Saturday.

  • More than $60 million damage in Osceola County alone
  • Could take a few days for FEMA to visit your neighborhood
  • Call FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA or visit online

President Donald Trump approved Orange, Seminole, Lake, Osceola, and Brevard counties to receive individual assistance.

FEMA hopes to help people who haven't been able to get to a phone or access the internet.

Once you register, it could take 10 days for FEMA to inspect your home for damages.

The amount you receive depends on their inspection.

News 13 spoke to one FEMA employee who said during the last disaster, people received about $8,000 to $10,000.

"There is no pool of money to pull from and that misconception is what had people not registering," said FEMA's Peter Sessum. "That is not how it works. Whatever you are entitled to, you are entitled to."

One homeowner in Osceola County said she applied for assistance Friday night after finally getting access to the internet.

She said it was fairly simple, but it took some time because she had to file a claim with her insurance company.

FEMA said you must do that in order to be eligible.

"You have to file for that insurance first," Sessum said. "By law FEMA cannot duplicate benefits. So file first, then we will see what benefits you are entitled to."

It may take some time for teams to get to your area.

To get more information on FEMA disaster assistance, apply for assistance or check the status of an application, go to disasterassistance.gov or call the FEMA disaster help line at 1-800-621-FEMA.

Business applicants looking for disaster loans may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via the SBA's secure website at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

FEMA will also pay for the cost to stay in motels for a limited period of time.
