A Brevard County second-grader is working to bring joy to other kids just before the new school year begins.

  • Nikhita Kumar wants to help kids who need school supplies
  • She got the idea after learning about family who lost parents
  • She created a YouTube video asking for donations

“I’m trying to save up my birthday money to help kids in need,” second-grade grade student Nikhita Kumar said.

Nikhita says she started gathering donations after hearing about a local family who lost their parents recently.

The kids were in need of donated school supplies.

“I want to try to make the world a better place,” Nikhita said.

She knew she wanted to help — but was also thinking bigger.

“She’s created something for herself, and I’m so happy and so blessed,” said her mother, Jayshree.

Making a video on YouTube, Nikhita was able to reach people throughout the county.

She's received more than $3,000 in donations that will go toward school supplies for kids in need this year.

Nikhita and her family hope this will also spark a passion to help others and start charities like theirs throughout the community.

“If one child could do this, just imagine if her friends, or whoever will watch her, could also do this, too,” Jayshree said.
