A woman is in critical condition after DeLand police say a man intentionally set her on fire in her car.

Now DeLand police are on the hunt for the suspect.

  • Woman, 39, found with burns on her body
  • Officials say fire was intentionally started

"She's in really bad shape, said DeLand police spokesman Chris Graham.

The remains of the charred awning of the home and soot in the grass is the spot where police say a man intentionally burned 39-year-old Tracy Adams in her car.

Neighbors said they thought they heard gunshots from the incident.

"I was sitting inside the house," said neighboe Joseph Cannistraci. "I opened a door, I heard a woman screaming constantly. I look outside and I don't see nothing. I hear a bang bang."

Police said first responders got to the scene around 8:30 Sunday night.

Someone called 911 saying Adams was on fire after she ran into her home with her clothes still lit and burns on her face and arms.

A police report says she yelled somebody was there to kill her.

Police believe accelerants were used to ignite the car but didn't say specifically what the suspect used.

Investigators said they don't know the relationship between the attacker and victim, but do believe they know each other.

"We do have a suspect, we know his name and we're out there looking for him," Graham said. "What he did was a despicable act. We're making sure he's brought to justice. We want to get justice for that family."

Police said they towed the car to a secure location.

They added there were no witnesses to the actual crime, just the aftermath, and they aren't yet releasing the suspect's name.

Police say the public shouldn't be concerned, this was an intentional act to another person.
