A Brevard high school football team isn't playing its first home game at home because the field is 'unplayable.'

  • Satellite High football field infested with mole crickets
  • Team unable to play home game on home field
  • Field closed while crews cover it with topsoil

The Satellite High field is infested with mole crickets and the grass is ruined, which has forced the school system to close it.

Crews worked to treat the field with insecticides this past spring to no avail.

Some parents of football players are outraged, saying this all could have been avoided.

"If you don't maintain the field, you can't play games at home," said Bert Gamin, a Satellite High parent. "How can we all work together to solve this problem so it doesn't happen anymore?"

Satellite High will play its first 'home' game at Melbourne High tonight.

The team will be allowed to sell concessions.

Meanwhile, the team will play on a turf-less home field next week after crews spread topsoil over it.

Brevard Schools will sod afterwards, and playing on the field will be a week-to-week decision.
