The 23-year-old man who died Tuesday during a standoff with a Daytona Beach Police officer died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Wednesday.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri said an autopsy performed by the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Officer showed Shakyri Willis died from his own gunshot.

Daytona Beach Police officers were called to the area of the 500 block of Bellevue Avenue around noon Tuesday after people reported Willis was walking around the area with a gun, threatening to commit suicide.

Willis' sister pleaded with him not to shoot himself. He reportedly pointed a gun at his head and neck before then pointing a gun at the responding officer.

The officer fired four to five shots from about 20 yards away, but Capri said the officer's shots missed Willis.

Capri said Willis wasn't really known to law enforcement. Willis' family reportedly told investigators that the man had taken some type of drugs about two weeks ago and had been acting "erratically" since. He had been to the hospital at least twice as he battled some sort of issue since the drugs, Capri said.

"It's just a tragedy," Capri again said Wednesday. "It's more prevalent now with mental illness, and the health care system needs to get better and do a better job investigating these cases."

Chris Maher, the police officer who fired the shots, was placed on paid leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
