Bethune-Cookman University hopes to move on from financial woes and other conflicts with the new year.

  • Bethune-Cookman University assembly
  • School rallies for unity, moving foward from last year

Interim President Hubert Grimes led the president's assembly Wednesday with students and staff.

One of the school's board of trustees members said the university has an avalanche of work to do, but promises they'll work tirelessly to get it done.

Students walked out of B-CU's performing arts center ready to take the next step toward a successful school year.

"I thought the assembly was great. I retained a lot of information, it really uplifted my spirits," said student Jamal Harrell.

Harrell attended the university last year as the school's financial troubles came to a head.

Grimes took over after former President Edison Jackson abruptly retired earlier this summer, after records showed the university mounted millions in losses during his tenure.

Grimes talked about gains and guaranteed these students a new season.

"I felt that he was sincere for the betterment of the school and for the betterment of the students," said Harrell.

Grimes is now the seventh president in more than 100 years.

"I want us to work with him instead of him leading us. He can lead each other and work toward whatever obstacles we might run into," said La'Tyana Coleman Harrison.

Students hopes this will be a good year of solid leadership.

"You have to have a great leader, hopefully the leadership is where it needs to be," said Harrell.

Students are ready to participate in "I love B-CU" day this Friday to show their school pride.
