Family and friends are trying to heal after a tragic shooting took the lives of two Kissimmee Police officers in the line of duty.

Richard Sam Howard, a sergeant with the Kissimmee Police Department, grew up playing football at Osceola High School. His fellow Kowboy and long-time friend Matthew Baker remembers him fondly. Baker said Howard's smile could light up even the darkest room.

"A perfect example of a human being," Baker said. "Gives back to his community at a drop of a hat. Has a contagious smile that not only lit up the room, but sets the example for the day. Great attitude."

Colleagues saluted him Monday as a procession brought Howard's body to Conrad and Thompson Funeral Home in Kissimmee.

"It's kind of an overwhelming feeling that you just can't even explain," Baker said. "Your gut hurts. You just want to fall to your knees because it can't happen to somebody like that."

Howard was officially sworn in Sept. 11, 2007, as a Kissimmee Police officer. He pledged to keep his community safe. He earned a promotion as a sergeant earlier this year. Howard served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army before becoming a police officer.

Howard leaves behind his wife, Billie Joe, and daughter Unique. His daughter's birthday was the day after Howard was shot and killed.

Friends said Howard loved putting on his uniform and serving the community of Kissimmee and that he died doing what he knew how to do best: protect.
