There wasn't a dry eye in sight as nearly 200 people gathered to remember fallen officers Matthew Baxter and Sam Howard.

"My heart is broken," said Kissimmee mayor Jose Alvarez.

People gathered on Sunday near the spot where two Kissimmee police officers were killed Friday night. Residents, community leaders and officers and deputies gathered on Palmway Street near The Hope Mission Church.

Kissimmee Police Department Chief Jeff O'Dell said these two officers were heroes that were patrolling this area because of their commitment to the community. "That is my commitment to my family at the Kissimmee Police Department and to you all,” said O'Dell. “We will get through it and we will be better because of it."

Everyone lifted their hands and spirits to the sky as they took part in a prayer circle. The pastor prayed for law enforcement officials and leaders in the community to enlighten them and the decisions they have to face. The vigil was also filled with lots of singing and music, all to remember these two heroes.

Sheriff Russell Gibson said law enforcement officers put on their uniform and walk out of their homes daily without a guarantee they will be coming back.

"They were the peacemakers. Just trying to make a difference in the neighborhoods they patrol because they care about you,” Gibson said. “People that they don't even know. They gave up their lives for a mission that they believed in. A better world. A better city of Kissimmee and I love them for that."

North Kissimmee is where these two officers were shot and killed, an area known for drug activity. Mayor Jose Alvarez made a call to action asking community leaders to become tools to help clean up these neighborhoods.

"But I know we're going to overcome it even better than we were. I know we will,” Alvarez said. “May the good lord continue to bless you and please keep all of our officers in your prayers."

Alvarez spoke about creating a round table discussion in the next coming weeks. So that leaders and the KPD chief can come together to talk about ways the city of Kissimmee can be improved.
