A Marion County resident shot and killed a suspected armed man who broke into his home and injured his dog, deputies said.

The home invasion happened Monday night on the 10000 block of SE 158th Place in Summerfield. According to investigators, the resident told deputies that a person armed with a handgun broke into his home and hurt his dog.

The resident, later identified as Shawn Paul Peterson, 35, said he barricaded himself in a room, but the home invader tried to force his way in.

That's when Peterson shot the suspected home invader, who fled, the resident told deputies.

Not too long after, a man was dropped off outside the Ocala Health Summerfield emergency department. The man, identified as Shawn Michael King, 32, died at the hospital.
