A Marion County woman says one man saved her grandfather's life after he got lost and ended up nearly 100 miles away from home.

  • Register walked an hour and a half away from his home, Daniels says

Ryck Daniels is a 52-year-old swing manager at the McDonald's in Ocoee on West Colonial Drive. Last month, Daniels says 93-year-old Bryant Register came into the restaurant, looking lost.

"He explained to me by saying he just left his son's house, so I said, "Oh around here?' Because I guess that's what he thought. And after talking to him I said, 'Well who are you trying to call? Let me see who you're trying to call,'" said Daniels.

Daniels said he called Register's granddaughter and told her he was at the McDonald's.

"She was like 'Oh my God, Orlando' and I said, 'Where you at?' And she said she’s up by Ocala, so I said 'Wow, that’s an hour and half away,' but he thinks he just left," said Daniels.

Register has dementia, something Daniels knows all about.

"My mother has dementia so I know the feeling of losing a loved one even around the corner," said Daniels.

For hours, Daniels kept Register at the restaurant until his family could come and get him.

"That’s what I told him I said 'You're staying here', so I offered him coffee, you know, something to eat and held him here," said Daniels.

Register's family says they cannot thank Daniels enough for what he did. Daniels, who also served in the Marine Corp, says he felt it was his job.

"Just instilled in to be a protector and just watch out for our people, no what color you are," said Daniels.
