A community group in Melbourne is proposing a resolution Tuesday to help create a cleaner environment and use cleaner sources of energy.

  • Group proposes idea of sustainability board
  • Creation of board to sustain resources
  • City Hall meeting to be held Tuesday

“Here in Brevard we are focused on speaking with all of the legislature here and trying to set up sustainability boards,” Karen Wade said.

Wade is part of the Rethink Energy Brevard chapter, which is trying to create a sustainability board in Melbourne.

She’s taking the idea to the city council Tuesday, hoping they’ll see the need to start focusing on cleaner energy sources that will benefit the health of the county.

“We have a very sick Indian River lagoon, we know that our natural resources are becoming stressed, and we also know we have a growth in population” Wade said. "It is very important the city creates this sustainability board so we can put a plan together that will better implement sustainability practices.”

Wade says a sustainability board would also help tackle issues like beach erosion and water and air pollution.

She hopes to implement more solar energy, even adding charging stations for electric cars in the future.

“If we don’t set up a sustainability board we are being forfeited the opportunity to prepare for these changes and properly execute a plan that will drive us towards sustainability,” Wade said.

If created, Wade says a sustainability board would focus on city resources, budget, and look at population growth.

The Rethink Energy Brevard chapter will be at City Hall to propose the resolution. The meeting is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
