The two men accused of carjacking a 93-year-old woman in a church parking are expected to appear before a judge on Friday afternoon.

The DeLand Police Department stated that David Leo Perkins III, 21, and Darius Matthews, 20, carjacked Marquita Steinmetz around 8:15 a.m., Thursday, at St. Peter's Catholic Church on New York Avenue in DeLand.

Perkins was released on July 1, after being convicted for aggravated battery and burglary. He spent three years behind bars.

Perkins now faces nine charges; they include resisting an officer, carjacking and battery with a deadly weapon.

Matthews is also being charged with carjacking and resisting an officer. He has a previous arrest from a battery charge.

Both men are being held at the Volusia County Jail in Daytona Beach.

Perkins and Matthews stole Steinmetz's car in the church parking lot and then dragged her several feet until she could not hang on anymore, police stated.

Police say they then took her car and after a pursuit with law enforcement, the suspects crashed the vehicle and run away from the scene.

But soon afterwards, they were both caught.

People who attend the church are shocked that this happened.

"We feed the homeless on weekends and give them lunch during the week. You don't expect it because it is a caring place," said Kathy, who attends the church and did not give her name.

DeLand Police Department Police Chief Jason Umberger said Steinmetz was doing fine after the incident.

"She was shaken up, but otherwise fine. I’m told she’s very resilient woman and she was very cooperate and very articulate in describing what happened to her," he said.

Police say Steinmetz does have some scrapes, cuts and bruises, but she was not seriously injured.

In a police report, Matthews told detectives Perkins was his cousin, but both deny stealing the car.

Both men are being held without bond and are expected to face a judge at the Volusia County Jail on Friday afternoon.
