The "hot" sign was on at Krispy Kreme doughnut shops, but it was a special deal that made for packed stores and lots of traffic Friday.

  • Customers flood Krispy Kreme's only Melbourne store
  • Chain was celebrating its 80th birthday with special
  • Drive-thru line caused quarter-mile backup on Wickham Road

Melbourne's lone Krispy Kreme location on Wickham Road was full of customers, and drive-thru traffic backed up a quarter-mile into the roadway.

Melbourne Police had an officer there, keeping watch over the hundreds of cars and trucks coming through.

Why all the fuss? A special "get a dozen doughnuts for 80 cents" — for one day only. It was the chains' way of celebrating its 80th birthday July 14.

Terri and Mike Brown commuted all the way from their Cocoa Beach vacation to wait in line.

"We don’t have them down in West Palm Beach, so this is special," Terri Brown said.

Customers had to purchase a dozen doughnuts at regular price to get the deal, but that didn't stop people from buying several of them.
