Orange County's animal shelter in Orlando is nearly at capacity, and the shelter has reduced adoption fees to get out as many animals as they can.

  • Shelter is near capacity as summer breeding reaches peak
  • Anyone can adopt from the shelter

The summer months are a peak breeding season, and it's also a time when more animals are surrendered to the shelter. On an average day during the year, the shelter takes in as many as 50 dogs and cats in a day. In the summer, that number can double.

The county says it has 539 dogs and cats in its care right now, along with another 102 animals in foster homes.

To help get more animals out, the shelter has reduced adoption fees to $10.

Any pet that has been at the shelter more than 10 days and has been featured on their Facebook or Twitter accounts are free to adopt.

Anyone can adopt from the shelter, even if you aren't an Orange County resident.

In addition, first responders and veterans can adopt for free, senior pets are free, cats are two for one and dogs that are heartworm positive are free. Those are all year long promotions. With heartworm positive pets, you may be able to get the cost of treatment sponsored.

The shelter has also made sure to vaccinate and fix many animals so that they can come home with their new family that day.

The Orange County Animal Shelter is located on Conroy Road, across from the Mall at Millennia. The shelter is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

You can see all the animals at the shelter on the Orange County Animal Services website.
