This week, we visited Volusia County, where a rapidly growing area is experiencing some growing pains.

  • Congestion issues on LPGA Boulevard west of I-95
  • Resident: Without quick action, traffic problems will get worse
  • County: Funding woes hindering quick improvements

A stretch of LPGA Boulevard west of Interstate 95 in Daytona Beach has been under some heat from locals.

Kim Davila wrote in this week:

"This road is two lanes and there are lots of accidents. Future development cannot handle this. Officials need to plan ahead and put in more roads, turn lanes, sidewalks, bike lanes and lights."

Davila has lived in Daytona Beach for the past two years.

“When we moved out here, it was quiet,” she said. “Now it's just booming with the economy..."

She claims that in even that short amount of time, the traffic has progressively worsened along LPGA Boulevard west of I-95.

"I'm alert. I'm slow. I take my time because people are flying on this road,” Davila said.

Davila said without significant improvements, things will only get worse.

"There are already several accidents here,” she said. “I hate to say this, but future accidents are definitely going to happen."

Davila's main complaint is that local officials have been slow to react to the changing dynamics of LPGA Boulevard.

"I would love to see this road with six lanes, because eventually, it’s going to need it,” Davila said. “There is no doubt. With 9,000-plus homes coming out here, probably more schools. It would be safe for the schools."

So, what's next?

We contacted Volusia County, which said, "A current shortage of transportation funding will limit the ability of the county and city to implement any roadway construction improvements in a timely manner."

County officials are currently debating how best to address this transportation funding shortfall. Each local jurisdiction within Volusia County has submitted a list of projects. Included in that: LPGA Boulevard from U.S. 92 to I-95.

Still, the county said, "Ultimately, it may be up to the [residents] whether they desire to seek alternative transportation funding."
