The search is on for at least two shooters after a Volusia County deputy was shot at during the weekend.

A Volusia Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a complaint about trespassing in a private wooded area along the 2000 block of East Kicklighter Road near Sand Crane Lane at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Office stated the unnamed officer walked over to the area when someone started shooting at him.

The deputy was not struck and returned fire. Investigators do not know whether the deputy hit anyone and said they think there are at least two suspects.

No suspect description was given out by the Sheriff's Office.

One man who lives nearby said the violence and trespassing needs to stop.

“I am not surprised, but I hate it. People need to respect other people's property. And they have no respect for it,” Herb Lesher said.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he's thankful the deputy was not injured.

“I have a deputy in full battle regalia that is out there saying he is with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. He is stopping, engaging people. And thank the good Lord he is safe, and we will see where the investigation takes us," Chitwood said.

Chitwood said the Sheriff's Office has received complaints in this area in the past. Orange City and Lake Helen police are helping with the search.

The sheriff said that in the future, his deputies will go out there with partners to check out these types of complaints.
