A "disgruntled employee" who was fired in April walked into an Orlando-area industrial building Monday morning with a handgun and a knife, opening fire and killing five workers before killing himself as deputies arrived to the scene.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings identified the shooter as 45-year-old John Robert Neumann Jr., of the Orlando area. He was a U.S. Army veteran, lived alone and didn't appear to belong to any type of subversive or terrorist organization.

The shooting happened at about 8:03 a.m. at Fiamma, an RV accessory company along North Forsyth Road, after Neumann made his way through a door in the rear of the vast facility, an area Demings said is larger than two football fields.

Demings said Neumann stopped at least once to reload his handgun and specifically targeted his victims.

The five people killed were Robert Snyder, 69; Brenda Motanez-Crespo, 44; Kevin Clark, 53; Jeffrey Roberts, 57; and Kevin Lawson, 46.

Neumann allowed an employee he didn't recognize to leave the building as he opened fire, Demings said. Most of the victims were shot in the head. Some were shot multiple times.

"We don't know why he chose this day," Demings said during a 2 p.m. update. 

It doesn't appear that Neumann used the hunting knife he had on his person during the attack. 

“To the best of our knowledge, he did not have a concealed weapons permit," said Demings.

Demings said that didn’t stop Neumann from targeting his victims.

“At least one of them he had a negative relationship with, but he was certainly singling out the individuals that he shot," Sheriff Demings said.

Neumann was Army vet, lived alone

Sheriff Demings said the disgruntled employed lived alone and did not have family in the immediate area.

Deputies spent several hours Monday evening searching Neumann's mobile home in Seminole County. They left with bags of evidence, but no word on what they found inside.

Neighbors at the Lake of the Woods Mobile Home Park say they saw Neumann around, but he largely kept to himself.

“Some people put up a front. Some people are good at that, you don’t believe that he did what he did," neighbor Davis Alter said. 

Neumann was honorably discharged from the Army in 1999. His criminal history includes arrests for DUI and possession of marijuana. He was involved in a June 2014 workplace incident where he was accused of battering another employee, but no charges were filed, deputies said.

He continued to work there until he was fired in April 2017.

Fiamma calls itself one of the largest manufacturers of awnings for camper vans, motor coaches and SUVs.

A woman at the scene, Shelley Adams, said her sister, Sheila McIntyre, was in the bathroom when the shooting happened. When she came out, she found her boss shot, Adams said.

Three men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Another male was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Kevin Clark, one of the victims, was a father of a 14-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy. He was involved with Lake Howell Pop Warner. According to a GoFundMe site set up for Clark, his wife died about nine years ago.

Family members of those who work at Fiamma were encouraged to go to Full Sail University at 3535 Forsyth Road to Live 1 building or call 407-679-0100, Ext. 3087.

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs offered sympathy to family and friends of those who were killed Monday.

"It's incumbent upon us not to become complacent or become callous to these horrific situations," she said.

Several agencies, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI, responded to the scene Monday.

No schools were impacted by the shooting, according to Orange County Schools.
