Deputies searched for a person early Friday morning who might have jumped into Lake Sherwood during a pursuit for a car burglary investigation, they said.

  • Deputies investigating car break-ins at apartment complex
  • 3 male suspects seen running away; 2 were arrested, deputies said
  • 3rd person seen jumping into lake but has not been found

At about 2 a.m., a car alarm went off at the Hawthorne Groves Apartment complex on Hawthorne Groves Boulevard, deputies said. A vehicle was broken into at the complex.

When they arrived, three males ran off, deputies said. A 17-year-old and 18-year-old were stopped and questioned, but a third person escaped, deputies said.

Investigators are looking for that third person, who they think ran into a shed at a nearby Lowe’s home-improvement store, then jumped a fence and went into Lake Sherwood off State Road 50 near Good Homes Road. A law enforcement helicopter spotted him in distress but have not been able to find him since.

Authorities found a backpack in the shed, which contained property from a vehicle in the complex.

Aside from the lake, deputies searched along S.R. 50. The helicopter and a number of patrol cars have since left the area. At one point, a Sheriff's Office diver was seen jumping into the lake.

The two males who were questioned have been charged with burglary to a vehicle.
