The Orange County Health Department of Health is using fish to tackle the pesky problem of mosquitoes.

  • Mosquitoes spread Zika, other dangerous diseases

Mosquito fish, which are native to Florida, eat hundreds of mosquito larvae each day.

But, it’s not just about tackling a nuisance — for the Health Department, it's also about combating illnesses.

“Right now, we’re concerned with the Zika virus, but you also can’t forget about chikungunya, dengue fever, yellow fever. And even though we may not have malaria here, these are all mosquito-borne illnesses,” the Health Department's Kari Lara-Murabito said.

The agency picks places to drop mosquito fish based upon resident complaints.
