A man drove a van into a crowd of people outside a north London mosque early Monday morning, injuring 10 in what police are investigating as a terror attack.

  • Attack is latest in string of attacks on civilians in UK

One man was dead after the attack at Finsbury Park mosque, but it's not clear whether he died as a result of the attack or from something else. The van struck as a group of people were gathered just after midnight just outside the mosque to tend to a man who had collapsed, police said.

Three men were able to pen the 48-year-old driver to the ground until police arrived and arrested him.

Some witnesses on the scene say they saw two other men running from the van after the attack, but when asked about that, police said the attacker acted alone.

British Prime Minister Theresa May spoke this morning about the attack.

“Today we come together as we have done before, to condemn this act, and to state once again that hatred and evil of this kind will never succeed," May said.

Sky News reported that the mosque's imam prevented the crowd from beating the attacker until police arrived.

Earlier this month on London Bridge, attackers used a vehicle and then knives to kill eight people and wound many others on the bridge and in the nearby Borough Market area. Three Islamic extremists who carried out the attack were killed by police. Earlier this year, a man plowed into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four people before stabbing a police officer outside Parliament.

Manchester was also hit in May when a bomber killed more than 20 people at an Ariana Grande concert.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim to serve in that position, issued a statement online.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the terrible attacks in Manchester, Westminster, and London Bridge, it is also an assault on our shared values of tolerance, freedom, and respect," he said.
