Four people who recently visited two Orlando-area fitness gyms are being treated for Legionnaires' disease, the Florida Department of Health said.

Two visited the L.A. Fitness on Kirkman Road in MetroWest and two visited the L.A. Fitness on South Orange Blossom Trail in the Hunter's Creek neighborhood, health officials said.

Bacteria samples were taken from the sites and Health Department officials who performed on-site inspections of both facilities Friday found "favorable conditions" for Legionnaires' disease. The spas and showers at each gym were shut down until they undergo specific sanitation protocols.

"Typically, if you look at the CDC, Legionnaires' disease is contracted at hospitals or institutions that have self-contained water systems, such as L.A. Fitness does," said Kent Donahue with the Florida Department of Health in Orange County. "It’s a concern. We want to make people aware of the concern."

The Health Department required the gyms to perform hyper-chlorination to the spas and install point-of-use filters in the showers.

On the door of the MetroWest facility on Tuesday morning, a sign stated that the spas were closed at 8 p.m. Monday for maintenance. Those signs have since been taken down and people were seen using the facilities.

A gym user there said he was not concerned.

"I came last week on Friday, I think it was, and there was only one shower, so that’s when it said, 'Oh, I can’t take a shower, oh man,'" Freddy Zapata said.

The MetroWest L.A. Fitness issues a statement:

"L.A. Fitness Orlando MetroWest always puts its guests first, so although it has not been conclusively shown through testing, we want you to be aware of this possible association and provide you with some information about Legionnaires' disease so you are informed."

Signs of the bacterial disease include high fever, chills and a cough. Officials said anyone with symptoms of pneumonia should seek treatment immediately.

Health Department officials said there have been 17 cases of Legionnaires’ disease reported in Orange County this year. In mid- to late-April, four people were treated for Legionnaires' disease after all were found to have visited an L.A. Fitness in Ocoee.

Legionnaires' cases in Lake County

In Lake County, two people with confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease linked to a hot tub in an adult community have recovered from symptoms, the county Health Department said.

Health officials think the Legionnaires' cases originated in mid-May from a hot tub at the Summit Greens adult community center in Clermont.

A third patient who showed symptoms similar to Legionnaires' disease died, but test were negative for the bacterial disease.

The community center was provided with a checklist from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to remove the bacteria, and the protocols were completed, a Health Department epidemiologist said.

The CDC is retesting samples from the third patient to confirm they didn't have Legionnaires'.
