The Ocoee Police Department is reminding businesses that the rules have changed for sign spinners who stand on streets trying to attract customers.

  • Under new rules, signs can only be 2 feet by 4 feet
  • Sign spinners could be fined $100

The city commission unanimously passed a measure that restricts where spinners can stand and perform.

On State Road 50 in Ocoee, spinners like Mercedes Moore can be seen twirling her sign and listening to music.

"My opinion would be to get a smaller sign so I don't have to pay it," said Moore.

Now Moore believes the city is trying to spin her out of town by cutting her paycheck.

"The bigger the sign, the bigger they think their business will run," said Moore, whose sign points to Cricket Wireless.

However, the city commission has a problem with how large the signs are. Under the new rules, signs can only be 2 feet by 4 feet.

"Maybe they would see it, but I don't think customers would actually go inside," said Moore.

The Ocoee Police Department said spinners could be fined $100 for anyone in violation of the new requirements.

So far, no tickets have been issued, but officers are letting everyone know about the new rules.

Commissioners said twirling signs were distracting for drivers and that is why they approved the measure.
