  • Deputy shot suspect during physical fight

The shooting occurred at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officials said Deputy John Stubbs responded to the area of the Florida Turnpike near mile marker 200 in reference to a report of a possible drunk driver.

The suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Carlos J. Garcia Petrovich, fled when Stubbs attempted to conduct a traffic stop, officials said.

The deputy then spotted Petrovich at the Pilot gas station located at 3050 E. State Road 60 in Yeehaw Junction.

When Stubbs attempted to place Petrovich under arrest, officials said the man was uncooperative and fled on foot from the gas station.

The deputy pursued the Petrovich again and made numerous attempts to take him into custody, but the man became violent.

According to officials, Stubbs shot Petrovich during a physical fight.

Petrovich was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deputy received minor injuries from the altercation and was treated at a hospital.
