A construction worker is in critical condition after he was struck on the side of the road by a semi truck that drove off Tuesday morning, troopers said.

The worker was standing next to a construction pickup truck on the shoulder of southbound U.S. 27 and Frank Jarrell Road in Lake County at about 7:29 a.m.

That's when a passing semi left the roadway and sideswiped the pickup truck, pinning the worker between the vehicles, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The semi then left the scene.

Troopers said the construction pickup was "well off the roadway."

Luciano Angeles, 36, of Lakeland was in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center. A passenger in the construction truck, 38-year-old Hector Olivera of Lakeland, was not injured.

Jason Samuels, whose construction company, A1 Concrete US LLC, owns the struck pickup truck, said he was on scene at the time of the crash and described the semi as maroon in color.

The semi is also hauling a trailer, witnesses told FHP. It should have damage on the right, front and lower right side of the cab, FHP said.

Charges are pending.

Anyone with information about the driver of the semi is asked to call FHP at 407-737-2213.

CORRECTION: This story was updated Wednesday, May 3, to indicate that A-1 Concrete US LLC was the owner of the construction pickup truck that was hit, not the semi. The color of the semi was also updated.
