Advocates are taking a stand and protesting the homeless shelter proposal in Volusia County.

The Volusia County Council is still moving towards building the first step of the homeless shelter, which would go on county donated property near the Volusia County Jail in Daytona Beach. Efforts to build the shelter have been ongoing for years, due to funding issues.

Homelessness advocates are asking the council to think twice before moving forward with the shelter, saying the proposal does not actually address the needs of the homeless, but would create beds for people leaving the jail.

"It doesn't provide new homeless services. All the money is being spent on a building and infrastructure instead of what nation best practices says we should focus on housing solutions. Which is getting people into housing," homelessness advocate Thomas Rebman said.

On Thursday, Rebman and other local advocates are asking for the council to focus on housing solutions for the homeless versus a shelter near the jail.

They plan on making their voices heard despite the county council moving the discussion to a later meeting.

With this protest, Rebman told News 13 he hopes just one commissioner might change his or her mind and change his or her vote in the future regarding the shelter.
