The Central Florida Expressway Authority has approved a $1.6 billion road work plan, the largest in the agency's history.

  • Expressway Authority approves largest plan in agency's history
  • 5-year, $1.6 billion plan will fund completion of Wekiva Parkway
  • Other funds to go to SR 408/I-4 interchange, other maintenance work

A large chunk of the budget in the five-year plan will go to finishing the Expressway Authority's sections of the Wekiva Parkway (scheduled to fully open in spring 2018), and a $230 million contribution to the state to be used for the "I-4 Ultimate" State Road 408/I-4 interchange project, the agency said in a news release.

The plan also includes widening 40 miles and resurfacing 60 miles of existing expressways, plus updates to lighting, signs, toll collection systems and other safety initiatives.

The agency projects the plan will create more than 11,000 jobs in Central Florida.

The Central Florida Expressway Authority, created by the Florida Legislature in 2014, runs the seven named expressways encompassing 109 miles in Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties and operates the E-PASS system.
