After the firing of FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, 49-year-old Andrew McCabe became acting director.

On Tuesday, Trump said in a letter that the ousting will "mark a new beginning" for the FBI. The White House says its search for a new director will start immediately.

Here are 10 things you should know about McCabe:

  1. McCabe received a bachelor's degree from Duke University in 1990 and a Juris Doctordegree from Washington University in St. Louis.
  2. Comey appointed McCabe as Deputy Director of the FBI on Jan. 9, 2016.
  3. McCabe began his career as a special agent with the FBI in 1996.
  4. He first reported to the New York Division, where he investigated a variety of organized crime matters.
  5. He later served as the assistant section chief of International Terrorism Operations Section One, where he was responsible for the FBI's counterterrorism investigations in the continental United States.
  6. In 2006, McCabe shifted his focus to counterterrorism matters when he was promoted to FBI Headquarters as the unit chief responsible for extraterritorial investigations of Sunni extremist targets.
  7. In 2008, McCabe was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office's Counterterrorism Division.
  8. In May 2011, McCabe returned to the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters as deputy assistant director to oversee the international and terrorism investigation program.
  9. Before entering the FBI, McCabe worked as a lawyer in private practice. 
  10. McCabe will serve until a permanent replacement is selected.
