Police are looking for the driver who hit a Cocoa police motorcycle officer Sunday and then fled the scene.

  • Motor officer injured in hit and run during police escort
  • Jeep pulled out in front of Officer Rickford Leitch
  • Driver of Jeep fled the scene

Officer Rickford Leitch was one of more than a dozen police motor officers working to escort the “Moving Wall” through Brevard County to its stop at Wickham Park.

Officials said as the procession moved south on US 1 and Rosa L. Jones Blvd., a dark blue Jeep Cherokee attempted to turn east onto Rosa L. Jones and pulled directly in front of Leitch. He crashed into the side of the Jeep and was thrown from his motorcycle.

Officials said the driver of the Jeep fled from the officers who attempted to stop him.

He is described as a black male in his late 20's or early 30's, possible mustache and goatee, short hair, possibly short dreads. The Jeep has heavy damage to the driver-side door and is missing the driver-side mirror.

Officer Leitch was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne with non-life threatening injuries.

The Rockledge Police Department is investigating the crash.
