Fire rescuers are working to contain a fire which has jumped onto both sides of State Road 44 in Deland.

  • Burn ban enacted in Volusia County
  • Fire has burned 250 acres near DeLand
  • State Road 44 was shut down due to low visibility

For hours Friday morning, the highway from Deland to New Symryna was shut down due to low visibility caused by smoke.

Using hundreds of gallons of water, fire rescue workers are battling a fire called the "Demascus Blaze." The fire started along State Road 44 on one acre of land, but quickly consumed about 250 acres.

The cause of the fire is unknown but under investigation. On Friday, Volusia County enacted a county-wide burn ban.

"Right now it's dry, it's hot," said Julie Allen with the Florida Forest Service. "You know the Fourth of July is coming up. Everyone wants to start using fireworks but you know with burn bans it's just an incredible opportunity to get ahead."

Officials say the burn ban in Volusia County will stay in place as long as dry conditions persist.

Right now, Volusia County officals are considering a firework ban. Depending on the weather conditions it could impact the 4th of July celebrations.

Fire crews also explained, they will be on site as long as the Demascus fire continues to burn.
