  • Rios' 1st trial ended in mistrial; 2 other people serving life sentences

Victoria Rios faced a judge at the Osceola County Courthouse on Tuesday. She's accused of helping three others in the July 3, 2013 killing of 22-year-old Eric Roopnarine and steal his cash along with a TV and other electronics.

Jurors heard from both prosecutors and the attorney representing Rios. According to the State Attorney’s Office, Rios, who was 17 years old at the time, lured Roopnarine in with the promise of sex.

When he opened the door for Rios, David Damus and Konrad Schafer rushed into the home, shot him in the face and stabbed him multiple times, authorities said.

During Tuesday's trial, Sarita Roopnarine, Eric's mother, took the stand. She was extremely emotional, describing how she found her son dead on the living room floor.

“I was scared and I was looking around to see if anybody was there and I kept screaming, 'Who did this to you? Can you tell us what you saw?' I saw Eric lying in a pool of blood,” she said.

The deputy who first arrived on scene and several detectives took the stand as well.

A .45 caliber rifle was introduced in court as one of the murder weapons.

Rios' attorney, however, told the jurors that they would find reasonable doubt.

"She wound by being pried and used by numerous people," the attorney said.

Rios is charged with first-degree murder along with home invasion and other charges.

She is the last person in the case to be tried in the deadly home invasion. Her original trial ended in a mistrial.

Damus and Schafer have been sentenced to life in prison for their roles in Roopnarine's killing.
