Longtime residents of the Four Corners area are worried that growing traffic dangers will end up forcing them out of their homes.

  • Four Corners-area residents think intersection is clogged, dangerous
  • Busy intersection is at Avalon Road and US 192
  • Orange County says it will conduct a traffic study

Diane Fellows wrote in this week:

"Traffic is a nightmare near the intersection of Avalon Road and US 192. Traffic backs up several times a day back to our neighborhood and I've seen so many near misses. Someone should take a serious look at this area," Fellows stated.

Diane and Marvin Fellows' family has been a part of the community off Arrowhead Boulevard near Avalon Road since the 1960s, but they are not happy with the area's current traffic situation.

"We like it up here," Marvin Fellows said. "But it's gotten to the point where you hate to leave because there is so much traffic."

The Fellows family says taking even a short trip to the store takes some planning.

"We just feel like we are trapped in this community," Diane Fellows said. "We can't get out on Avalon Road. We have problems getting out on (US) 192. And that's our only two options."

The Fellows reached their breaking point after Diane says she was nearly hit on Avalon Road near a blind curve.

"There was a guy flying around in our lane, " she said. "I had to get over to avoid a head-on collision."

The Fellows were so fed up with their area’s traffic conditions that they decided to take it upon themselves to conduct their own traffic study, taking pictures and videos at places they perceived to be problem spots.

"The other night, we were down there around 3:30 p.m.," Marvin said. "We spent 45 minutes there. We counted 500 cars that were going south."

Development certainly could be an issue why there are so many vehicles now along US 192 and Avalon Road.

For example, take The Grove off Avalon Road just down the street from the Fellows' house. It is a new, nearly 900-room luxury hotel. When you couple that with other developments in the area, including the new Margaritaville Resort off of US 192, residents say that very soon, we could have an infrastructure problem.

Now, the Fellows are faced with a difficult choice ahead of them. If nothing changes, they say they will leave.

Orange County government does have some plans for the area, but it may not be immediate. Orange County government responded:

“At this time we do not have any near-term improvements planned for this area. Avalon Road will eventually be widened to four lanes all the way to US 192, but that project is very long term. At that time, Bali Boulevard will be restricted to a right in/right out connection," Orange County government stated. "Due to the traffic issues currently experienced, coupled with the growth in the area, we will conduct a traffic study to determine if any improvements can be made.”
