The 10-foot whale washed up at Orchard Beach at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police officers, the New York Parks Department and marine life experts worked for several hours to try to save the animal, but it had to be euthanized.

The body of the whale was brought to the Bronx Zoo, where a necropsy revealed the whale had pneumonia. The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said the whale was also deemed to have suffered significant weight loss.

Earlier this month, the carcass of a humpback whale washed ashore on a Queens, New York beach.
