A wildfire in Lake County is not only affecting school buses but also impacting testing.

  • One elementary school delayed FSA testing because of absences
  • The fire is 60 percent contained

Seminole Springs Elementary delayed testing until Thursday because of student absences that were likely caused by the closure of State Road 44.

The road has been closed periodically since Saturday due to smoke from the Sod Farm fire.

Kristi VanDyke had to take her three sons to school all week.

“They didn’t have any bus service in the morning,” she said. “We had to take them in to school and having two children at two different elementary schools with the same start times was very inconvenient.”

VanDyke said her fourth-grade son had Florida Standards Assessments testing this week.

“He missed the Tuesday FSA, but luckily when the smoke cleared, I did get him into school on Tuesday and they were able to pull out and test him,” she said.

School board member Stephanie Luke says the district is having discussions with local law enforcement to try and find alternative bus routes for the 373 students impacted.

The Florida Forest Service says the Sod Farm fire is 60 percent contained.
