Drivers are going to see significant changes on Interstate 4 in downtown Orlando beginning Thursday night because of the I-4 Ultimate project.

The latest phase of the project will shift all eastbound and westbound traffic onto newly constructed temporary bridges.

Once traffic can be shifted onto the temporary bridges, crews will begin demolishing the existing I-4 bridges and build new ones.

This work will actually begin Thursday night and Friday morning. That means you can expect intermittent lane and ramp closures in downtown Orlando.

"A traffic shift of about one mile for eastbound I-4 between South Street and Colonial Drive is scheduled to occur overnight in early May. The traffic shift will move three lanes of eastbound I-4 traffic onto newly constructed temporary bridges between eastbound and westbound I-4," I-4 Ultimate document states.

On the westbound side of I-4, traffic will be shifted about 11 feet to the inside between Colonial Drive and South Street.

In addition to multiple lanes being closed intermittently over the next couple of days, the ramps to I-4 from Ivanhoe Boulevard and Amelia Street will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

If you drive during that time, you should consider entering I-4 westbound from either Colonial Drive or South Street.

As for the eastbound side of I-4, it will be shifted over to new bridges between South Street and Colonial Drive.

During the overnight hours, the on-ramps from State Road 408 and Anderson Street will be closed, as well as the off-ramp to Amelia Street.

Your alternate route will be Garland Avenue, because it runs parallel to I-4 and it reconnects with the interstate farther down the road.

The $2.3 billion, years-long I-4 Ultimate project is renovating 21 miles of interstate from west of Kirkman Road to east of State Road 434 in Longwood.
