A body was found 1 mile off New Smyrna Beach by a dredging company, the U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday.

  • Autopsy must be conducted before identification
  • 8-year-old boy disappeared off beach last week

The Coast Guard took a medical examiner out to a dredging vessel to work on the case.

The agency said it doesn’t know whether it's the body of an 8-year-old boy who disappeared in the ocean off New Smyrna Beach last week. The medical examiner must perform an autopsy before letting authorities know whether it's the boy.

The boy was swimming with his sister when he was swept out by a rip current. His sister went in to the ocean to try to help but was swept up herself. She was treated and survived.

However, Wednesday marks day five of the search for the boy. A spokesperson with Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue said it will not suspend its search for the boy until it can confirm the body found is the little boy.
