Daytona Beach is one step closer to having a 100-bed homeless shelter after Thursday's Volusia County Council meeting.

City leaders approved a plan for the shelter, currently called First Step Shelter.

It calls for the county to pitch in $4 million for the construction of the shelter.

But Thursday, county leaders called for the shelter to be built on city, not county, property west of Interstate 95, near the Volusia Branch Jail.

County leaders also want staff to prepare a contract stipulating the county’s participation in the plan.

No word yet on when construction could begin on the shelter.
