The Brevard County Sheriff's Office released the identities of the man and the deputy in Tuesday's deputy-involved shooting at Merritt Square Mall.

  • Construction boss, security officer says man was erratic
  • Deputies say he was swinging a metal fence piece

Deputy Marissa Wright shot William Lee Moon, 45, of Winder, Georgia Tuesday outside the mall.

The sheriff's office says Moon charged at Wright with a long piece of metal fencing, forcing her to shoot him. However, deputies say Moon continued to resist deputies even after being wounded. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Moon was a construction worker at the mall on State Road 520. He was confronted by his boss Tuesday about erratic behavior and became aggressive. Ivey said Moon left the construction area, came back to the parking lot and threatened a security officer after he questioned the man's behavior.

None of the deputies at the scene were injured.

"From everything I’ve seen at this point, our deputy took the absolute right action," Sheriff Ivey said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Moon traveled from Georgia as part of the construction crew. The sheriff's office says  Moon has a lengthy criminal arrest history in Georgia that goes back to 1989.

Deputy Wright has been with the sheriff's office since December 2014. She has been on patrol in the south precinct and the east precinct. Wright is on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.
